The truth is sleep is necessary for anti-aging and beautybenefits in general, as well as health and hormonal balance. I've neverunderstood the expression: "I'll sleep when I die" because lack ofsleep will contribute to the deterioration of your body and immune system...andcould very well contribute to an early grave! I don't know about you, but whenI don't get quality sleep, or get less sleep than I'm used to for more than onenight, I just don't feel right. I'm more bloated, the lines on my face seemmore pronounced, my skin looks dull, not to mention crankiness, heightenedemotional sensitivity and fogginess. It can even heighten depression!

You may be thinking"well, that's why there's a Starbucks or Dunkin' Donuts on every corner!Just drink caffeine!" True, caffeine will give you a jolt, but more thanone cup a day may actually be harming you. Due to the ongoing stress in oureveryday lives (kids, meetings, deadlines, family, money, etc.) your adrenalglands are working overtime. The adrenals sit on top of our kidneys and they'rein charge of monitoring the body’s stress response through the release ofcortisol and adrenaline in the ‘fight or flight’ response. Both of thesehormones are essential when in balance in order to have a healthy stressresponse and fight infection.

What has happened is our sense of actual perceived danger versusour day to day stresses have become blurred. Our body perceives these daily, routine stresses andresponds to them the same way it would as if we were in a life or deathsituation.

In response to the stress,we secrete cortisol and adrenaline. The problem with this is that eventually itwill deplete our adrenals, and there will come a point where they can no longersupply the body with the healthy levels of cortisol needed, making youchronically fatigued and more susceptible to illness.

Other symptoms of adrenalfatigue are (and these are just a few):

Feeling tired in the evening but resisting going to bed

Brain fog and difficulty remembering things

Craving salty or sugary foods to keep your energy up

Unexplained hair loss

Gaining weight easily and having difficulty losing it, especially in the waist

Frequently getting the flu and having a hard time getting better.

Fueling this fire withcaffeine only exacerbates the adrenal depletion by giving you a jolt of energyand adrenaline, which, as you guessed it- drains our adrenals even further.

Our body also repairs duringour sleep, building the immune system and "resetting" hormones, whichare essential in staying physically young and slim. It also keeps us balancedemotionally and health-wise. The body needs eight to nine hours of sleep duringwhich time cortisol levels and blood sugar begin to drop and regulate after thesixth hour of sleep. Receiving six hours or less of sleep not only deprives youof rest, but it can actually make you gain weight by storing elevated levels ofcortisol and sugar.

It's also very important forthere to be complete darkness in order for your pituitary gland to signal thatthe restoration can begin. The pituitary glad is responsible for creatingbalance between nine different hormones. Think of this gland as the conductorof an orchestra and the hormones in the body as being instruments. Without aconductor, all instruments just make noise. It takes the coordination of theconductor to create harmony between all the instrument sounds in order tocreate a beautiful symphony. Such is the case with your pituitary gland.

In fact, if you sleep with alight or TV on and find that you're always tired, this may be part of theproblem. As you can see, sleep is essential for your immune system, so ifyou're ill or feel like you're getting sick, sleep could be part of yourremedy.

So what happens if you're ina situation that doesn't allow you to get as much rest as you want on a dailybasis? Well, get it when you can. Make sure there is at least one, if not twodays a week where your body can replenish. It will make a world of difference.Think of it as a supplement to your workout and a preventive measure for yourwell-being. It's not about being lazy. It's about being responsible andproactive about your health. And you need to be healthy and strong to be ableto provide for your loved ones.

The body is a wisemechanism, and when we treat it right, it will do wonders in return. We aresure to charge our pricey gadgets, and we willingly invest money and time inmaintaining our cars. However, somewhere along the line we’ve forgotten to dothis for ourselves, where the repair is free and the investment is priceless.Free facelift anyone?

(This article is purely informative and is not intendedto diagnose any illness or substitiute medical advice. I absolutely and without a doubt believe this is the number one cause of all skin and health problems!

Firstly though, how would you define inflammation?

Most people think of redness, burning, and overall discomfort, right?

Yes and no.

Yes, these can be some symptoms of inflammation, but no, inflammation doesn’t necessarily need to look like this. It can be silent, meaning you may not notice any outward physical indicators, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have it.

I will expand more on this subject later, but for right now I want to plant the seed that gets you thinking a little differently about your skin and what you’re eating.

I want to put a big question mark in your mind. You’ll thank me later!
The way I see it, inflammation does have its benefits as an evolutionary tool our body uses, similar to stress.

Stress, or what’s known as the “fight or flight response”, has been very useful for our ancestors when being animal’s prey was a constant possibility. It allowed a large amount of adrenaline to be pumped through the system to give the endagered human the ability to outrun and outsmart his or her attacker.

It still serves us today in times of danger.

However, this was intended for just that- moments of danger. In today’s society with more technology, more demands, more efficiency and less hours of sleep, we keep our bodies in this constant state of “fighting off danger” whether we realize it or not. Whether it’s there or not.

It gradually takes a toll on our health and weakens our immune system. It also opens us up to adrenal fatigue, fluctuations in hormone levels and overall draining and weakness.
Stress is useful in the small spurts it was intended for, but chronic stress harms us.
Likewise, inflammation has its place in our body’s ability to protect us. When we get a cut for example, inflammation is our friend. Our skin gets red because more blood is being sent to the affected area, increasing the white blood cells to fight off infection, and the area swells to give added padding and protection.

However, just like with chronic stress, chronic inflammation begins to harm us when it’s ongoing.

It creates more free-radicals and actually begins breaking down our tissue. It’s almost as if we turn our own protective mechanisms against us.

In the skin care world, it seems we can’t get enough of inflicting wounds onto our skin through the constant (and sometimes abusive) use of peels, Retin-A, Obagi or other lightening systems, lasers and microdermabrasion.

Am I saying you shouldn’t ever do any of these things?

No.

What I am saying is that we have gotten used to being hard on ourselves and think that being hard on our skin is the only way to get better results, faster. We deplete our skin constantly and fail to create balance…

And guess what? Your skin will rebel. It’s only a matter of time.

I will leave you with this and next post I will explain how and why and what you can do to turn it around, even if you are peeling and lasering.

Stay tuned…

What Products Should I Use To Relieve My Dry Skin?

Dry skin indicates that the condition of the skin barrier needs a little help, mainly because your skin doesn’t produce enough oils.

The lipid barrier is a naturally-ocurring barrier that consists of a mixture of oils and ceramides. Think of it as the ‘bouncer’ in your skin. It decides which ingredients to let in, and what to keep out. It makes the skin stonger, and the healthier it is, the more hydrated your skin will be, and the less irritated it gets.

It’s naturally acidic in its pH and this is to keep harmful bacteria and irritants out! When this barrier is weak or insufficient (which tends to be the case often with so many barrier-debilitating procedures such as strong peels, microdermabrasion, lasers, etc), it lends the skin to be more sensitized and more ‘reactive’ to products. It can also give way to more inflammation in the skin, which in turn accelerates aging, and increases the occurance of acne and pigmentation. (Click here to read more on inflammation)

This lipid barrier is very much influenced by diet, stress, hormones, prolonged exposure to water and cold, dry weather. If you live in a cold state or country, you know this first-hand.
Clients during winter-time in Colorado always have the same complaint: dryness.
This is due to the harsh, dry cold outdoors and then the heat inside every home
and business.

This constant fluctuation in temperature affects the fats that lubricate the skin
and begin breaking them down. Aside from this, it can cause the weakening and
breaking of small capillaries, causing redness and a ‘flushed’ look.
You are also more prone to developing wrinkles with dry skin.
What is Your Course of Action?

1. Your number one focus will be to rebuild and maintain a healthy barrier function
through a diet rich in fatty acids (in food and supplements), products that contain
the proper ingredients and sun protection. Remember: daily sun protection is a
must, especially if you live in high altitudes!
2. Avoid the use of scrubs. These are too harsh and can further break down your already weak lipid barrier.
3. Use serums that treat dryness and dehydration. Aside from being dry (your skin type), you’re also most likely dehydrated (your skin condition. These two typically go hand in hand because when you’re dry and lacking a stong lipid barrier, you don’t have anything to lock in moisture. In this case a serum will work on the hydration portion of your skin condition, and a moisturizer/cream will work on rebuilding lipid barrier function. Here are some ingredients to look for:

Aloe Vera

Borage seed oil

Ceramide

Cholesterol

Cocoa butter

Colloidal oatmeal

Dexpanthenol (pro-vitamin B5)

Dimethicone

Evening primrose oil

Glylcerin

Jojoba oil

Niacinamide

Olive oil

Safflower oil

Shea butter

If you’re dry and tend to be sensitive (where you get red, or itchy with certain products and ingredients), then look for these ingredients:

Chamomile

Cucumber

Feverfew

Green Tea

Perilla leaf extract

Pycnogenol

Red Algae

Red clover (trifolium pretense)

Thyme

Aloe Vera

Colloidal oatmeal

Dexpanthenol (pro-vitamin B5)

Evening primrose oil.

What Are Stem Cells and Why Are They Important In Skin Care?

There is new and groundbreaking technology revolutionizing the skin care industry and you may be seeing it here for the first time.

Skin care enthusiasts, listen up: This is the way the skin care and anti-aging market is headed and you definitely want to come along for this ride.

What am I referring to?

Why it’s the wondrous, miraculous and scientific world of adult stem cells.

According to New Beauty’s article on stem cell treatments in the 2010 Winter/Spring issue: “Doctors in the esthetic industry are ecstatic about the new discovery of fat-derived stem cells. Research shows they are a modern way of defying the signs of aging and oneday preventing aging all together.”

Exciting, right?

So the next question is obviously- do you know what stem cells are?

Most people have heard of them, but don’t fully understand how they work. I’ll let you in on the mystery without getting too technical. At least not yet (let me know what else you’d like to know and we’ll write it!)

Cells in our bodies are programmed for specific functions, but stem cells in particular are “blank” cells that can turn into whatever type of cell your body needs. They become “programmed” by the surrounding cells as they completely blend into their environment.

When you get a cut, for example, stem cells will likely be called to turn into the collagen-producing cells called fibroblasts in order to heal the wound. As they work they release small peptides called Skin Growth Factors (SGFs) and Cytokines. Think of these as the means through which they send each other messages in order for this communication to be fast, precise and efficient.

The problem is that as we get older and accumulate more damage, cells begin losing the ability to communicate with each other due to weakening signals, drastically reducing the number of Cytokines and Skin Growth Factors produced.

What this means to your cells is the downgrade from “High-Speed internet” communication when you’re young, to “dial up”, or no internet signal at all as you age!

Although there are many medical applications to stem cells, including growing new skin for burn victims or reconstructing breasts after a mastectomy, we’ve caught glimpse of the tremendous benefits when it comes to skin care.

They help regenerate blood vessels, calm inflammation, and it reduces pigmentation, scarring, stretch marks and blemishes. It also hydrates, restores luminosity and of course, reduces fine lines and wrinkles. In a nutshell, it supplements what the skin is lacking in any individual and gets the skin to act more youthful.

However, there is one product in particular that if far superior in scientific development and research that uses this incredible adult stem cell technology called ReLuma. Although there are a small handful of ‘stem cell’ products out there, beware of the stem cells derived from plants or apples.

Just ask yourself: “How well do you think a human cell is going to recognize and be able to utilize a cell from an apple?”

You catch my drift.

ReLuma also has 385 of the key SGFs and Cytokines essential to that “upgrade” for your cell’s communication, as opposed to only one to nine SGFs in some other products. This gives way for more immediate and visible results..

We can definitely say ReLuma helps everyone. In continually working on different skin, we can say there really isn’t anyone that can’t use it…unless, of course, you’re 12.

How Do I Know If LED Products Work?

(After 6 treatments with the PhotoActif Professional machine. Results are not typical in home use machines. Property of Rosa Cardinal International, LLC and www.europeanskininstitute.com)

There is a lot of hype nowadays promoting LED machines for home use, touting the same, amazing results you would obtain from a professional machine. It’s not to say you can’t get good use out of them and see some results, although they may not be as drastic as if you were getting them professionally done. I think we can agree that some results for the fraction of the cost can be just what you’re looking for and a perfect harmony between your beauty regimen and your wallet.

The truth is: a lot of these treatments can be very costly and sometimes self-treatment is the only realistic approach. However, remember not to be ‘wowed’ with all the fancy terminology and pictures of serious-looking people in lab coats. It’s your due diligence that you’re getting the best product, even if you’re looking for a bargain. Just because you can get a deal doesn’t mean you should get it, and by the same token, for those of you that are treatment snobs, just because it’s affordable doesn’t always mean it’s not good.

Moral of the story is you should always ask questions, but before you know what to ask or look for, I am going to educate you on how and why LEDs work.

Light-Emitting Diodes(LED): What are they?

LED lights are everywhere. They’re a semiconductor light source, which is a fancy term meaning it conducts electricity. The part that you’re interested in is how they work for skin care and why.

NASA first began using LED lights to grow plants during longer space shuttle missions, and by accident astronauts noticed their cuts being healed faster when handling the plants in this red light. See, without gravity, the healing time is very slow out in space and they would have to wait until returning to earth.

From here LED lights have been used to treat ulcers in cancer patients during treatment due to the lowered immune system, as well as to rehabilitate injured horses and other animals. Of course, everything seems to make its way back to skin care.

Did you know that body sees a wrinkle as a wound because of the depression (or indentation) in the skin tissue?

Bet you never thought of aging as a wound!

How Do LEDs Work?

This light therapy, depending on the wavelength on which it operates, will give off different colored light. The wavelength is measured in nanometers, or nm for short.

Although there is a range of colors, you may have noticed that most LEDs are blue or red; blue to calm acne and red for anti-aging.

Blue light has a wavelength of 450-500nm and red light has a wavelength of 610-760nm. However, there’s another light that is crucial when using LEDs for rejuvenation treatments and that’s infrared lighting which is 760-950nm.The larger the number, the deeper the penetration and it is imperative that any machine you use have the capability of both red and infrared. The best way to find this out is to ask what the highest wavelength is.

The different types of tissue in the skin, and body in general, have their specific light absorption abilities and characteristics. In other words, certain tissue can only absorb certain wavelengths of light. The most effective treatment should provide a variety of wavelengths to address different layers in the skin and body.

To get even more specific, this light, when it’s at the appropriate wavelength, stimulates energy production at a cellular level…that’s right; meaning within the cell! You may remember biology class and talk of mitochondria.

Ring a bell?

It’s in the mitochondria where food is converted into the energy on which the cells function, called ATP (or adenosine triphosphate). Think of ATP as ‘fuel’ for your cells to function. Our bodies get sluggish with age and our cell turnover slows down. LED at the appropriate wavelength will “wake up” the mitochondria to stimulate more energy production to allow vitality so every tissue and organ can run more effectively.

Other things that are dependent of specific wavelengths of light in order to create a chemical reaction are photosynthesis in plants, Vitamin D synthesis in our bodies and tanning (which I’m definitely not promoting!)

Are LED’s Lasers?

Yes and no.

Yes because they have the same healing effects (LED is referred to as a cold laser, which means no pain!), and no because they deliver light differently in their output. LED’s output is measured in milliwatts, and lasers are measured in watts. LED’s output is not damaging to the skin like a laser can be.

LEDs also have a certain cycle where they’re “on” for 0.5 seconds and “off” for 0.5 seconds. Lasers on the other hand are “on” for 0.000000000005 seconds and “off” for 0.999999999995 seconds (if you wanna get technical). What this means is that LED actually emits more energy on it’s “on” cycle than a laser, even though their output is less.

LEDs also penetrate a broader surface area and have the different wavelengths where as the laser only has a single-wavelength.

As Dr. Goldberg puts it (a board certified cosmetic dermatologist out of New York), “Unlike laser technology that relies on high-powered coherent light to create heat energy, LED photomodulation triggers the body to convert light energy into cell energy without thermal injury to tissue.”

What Will LED Do?

In a nutshell, here is a list:

Increased circulation and the formation of new capillaries. More capillaries= the more blood flow = more oxygen and nutrients needed for healing.

More collagen production. I think we all know what that means J

Stimulates ATP, the fuel on which cells run.

Increases lymphatic activity. This is specifically important for edema or swelling.

Increased DNA synthesis which helps damaged cells to be replaced faster.

Relieves pain by calming nervous tissue.

Stimulates fibroblasts, the cells responsible for building new collagen and repairing.

There are constantly a variety of beauty options on the market, which can be overwhelming. Having these essentials will ensure you're delivering the adequate ingredients to your skin, without investing too much time or layering too much product.

Consider this your Skin Care Basics 101.

The top 5 products you should be investing in are…

<more>1. You want an adequate face wash that will remove your makeup, ideally without stripping your skin or breaking down your lipid barrier (remember, this is how dehydration and sensitivities begin!) </more>

In other words, you want something that is NOT going to make your skin tight-feeling after you've washed. I know you oily people love this, but you can feel clean without having the taughtness. One that I've found that I find very effective for all skin types is the Yes To Carrots cleanser at any of your local drugstores. It may initially feel very creamy, but when you've rinsed it off entirely, your skin will feel amazing, no matter what your skin type!

When you don't clean your skin properly, you're building layers of dirt and your products won't be able to penetrate properly to do their job, so spend a good amount of time washing your face, and do it twice if you need to. If you have a Clarisonic– bonus.

2. You need a weekly exfoliation, and NO, I'm not referring to a scrub. I know scrubs are the standard, but they really don't do much. It's like microdermabrasion (which I also disapprove of): it'll feel great the first couple of days and that's it.

Microdermabrasion is worse because after the initial softness, your skin actually feels really tight and dry. This is due to harshly breaking down the lipid barrier and allowing for total trans-epidermal water loss (aka- dehydration and losing water in your skin). Although they're gentler, scrubs are also abrasive and break down the lipid barrier.

An exfoliant I LOVE is Polish by Osmosis. It's sold only to professionals, so I can't provide link. However, write me at dermadivas@gmail.com and I will hook you up.

3. The most important step in your skin care regimen will be your serum. Serums are specifically designed with a smaller molecular structure because they're meant to penetrate deeper and be the actual corrective portion of your skin care. If your skin concerns are anti-aging, then you want an anti-aging serum. If you're oily and have problems with acne, you want a serum designed to treat this. If you have rosacea or sensitive/reddened skin, then you want to incorporate a soothing and calming, anti-inflammatory serum.

Serums are meant to be layered under a moisturizer and are designed to work synergistically with a hydrator/moisturizer.

I have clients often ask me: do I really need all these products?

The answer is, YES.

All products are developed to work at different levels in the skin (again they're designed with different molecular sizes and weight for this purpose), and problems don't just happen on the epidermis (the most superficial skin you touch). It happens deeper than that.

If you’re going to invest money in anything, let it be in a good serum.

4. Textures and ingredients will vary depending on your skin type and condition, but a moisturizer is essential in maintaining a healthy lipid barrier balance. Just as I mentioned a serum is important to work deeper to correct skin issues, a moisturizer is going to strengthen your protective barrier to keep water and other nutrients INSIDE the skin.

I love Quench by Osmosis. Again, write me and I’ll help you out.

5. And last but not least, you need a broad spectrum sunblock to reduce inflammation, and maintain all the improvements you make with your skin care (you didn't think I'd forget an SPF, did you?) Not protecting your skin really just results in a waste of money. It's like spending money on a really nice car (I like Mustangs!) and not buying the insurance. What's the point? I love Eminence Sun Defense Minerals because they go on dry, and regardless if you have dry or oily skin, it will feel light and look very natural. Acne clients especially love this!

Remember that not sunblocks are created equal. Refresh your memory and read our article on what make's an effective, broad-spectrum sunblock.

With these basics in place, your skin will be very happy with you and it should show! I recommend having a few different serums on hand to treat the different skin conditions you may be facing, as this changes with weather, stress, environment and medications.

You're now ready to combat any skin issue with your complete Basic Skin Care arsenal.

Your beauty blogger,
Marcella.

How Do I Make Sleepy Eyes Wide With Makeup?

I have recently posted a bunch of beauty video tutorials on the Tyra Banks' website. If you have really small pores all over, you are probably dry.

Regardless of any claims made by cosmetic companies or professionals, you cannot change your pore size. As I said, it is genetic and embedded in your DNA. However, there are ingredients and products that can help minimize the appearance of your pores.

(Note: When examining your pores, never take into consideration the size of the pores on your nose. It is very rare when someone, regardless of skin type, does not complain of the pores in this area because they are typically larger here.)

However, your skin condition or concern could influence your skin type. Your skin condition is susceptible to external influencers and changes in:

your environment (including weather and pollution)

diet

stress

medications

hormones

sun damage

and age

Taking all of these aspects into consideration makes you and your skin type and condition unique. We shower, apply deodorant, carry breathmints and anti-bacterial gels…

But, can you tell me how long you spend cleansing your skin (especially at night when you’re tired from a long day of work)??

BEFORE you answer that, I want you to really think and calculate how long it takes you to apply your skin care products and makeup.

10–15 minutes?

Even if it’s five minutes, I guarantee you it’s a lot longer than what you spend cleansing your skin!

So again, let me ask you:

How long do you spend cleansing your face?

Here’s the dirt (punn somewhat intended):

WE ARE DIRTY!

According to research conducted by the International Dermal Institute, most women on average only spend 20 SECONDS on cleaning their face! (not usually including neck and chest area.)

Obviously, this is not enough time considering the layers of smog, grime and environmental pollutants that have accumulated throughout the day (on top of your skin care, SPF, makeup and natural sebum.)

(For men, or those of you who don’t wear makeup, this still applies.)
Not a pretty picture, wouldn’t you agree?

This is why it is SO important to cleanse your skin properly before going to bed.

If you find that you’re just too tired at night (and tend to fall asleep on the couch), just be sure to do your routine as soon as you walk in the door.

As you can now see, it will take more than some water and 20 seconds of rubbing to even begin penetrating the layer of oil-based grime that coats your skin’s surface.

Also think of this:
How can your skin care products even begin doing what they’re supposed to do without being able to get past this layer of “debris”?

Can you imagine now how this is contributing to dulling your skin’s appearance, as well as clogging and congestion?

But before you begin stripping your skin with harsh astringents, here are some words of advice:

Be sure to double cleanse your skin (that’s right…wash it twice!)

The first cleanser should be oil-based (oil attracts oil--basic chemistry facts!)

If you have clogged or oily skin, contrary to popular belief, using an oil-based cleanser first will help break down the oil barrier on the surface of your skin.

Consider this a cleanse-prep. For this step, look for products with light, plant-based oils such as: Olive, Rice Bran, Kukui Nut, and Apricot Kernel Oils.)

Remember to cleanse the entire face (including hairline), neck, chest and even in the cleavage area between the breasts (oil and sweat accumulate here as well and can cause break-outs.)

Your second cleansing should be done with a cleanser appropriate for your skin type or simply based on your texture preference (i.e. foaming cleanser vs. milky cleanser.)

If you prefer foaming cleansers (to get that clean feeling), be sure to use one that does not leave your skin tight or taught-feeling (this indicates it is throwing off the pH balance of your skin, which is important for your skin’s health.)

Use the Clarisonic brush with your second cleansing. The Clarisonic brush is an amazing Regardless, that's not your concern so I won't bore you with details. What I'm trying to say is I'm sorry I haven't written in a little while...Alright, alright-more like four weeks. Oh-well, I'm here now!

Although today's post is not that long, I did want to give two words of advice to all brides about to get married who have hired a professional makeup aritst:

1- Schedule a trial run and
2- Bring pictures of makeup (and/or hair) you like.

This isn't because we don't know what we're doing, or because we need help with a "natural look" or "smokey eye". It's because the image that's in your head, may not translate to us and this may create frustration on your part. (I touched upon this in a previous post. Click here to read)

Having visual representation also helps YOU, as the bride, define what you want. I've noticed there are women that have this general notion of what they think will look beautiful (i.e. etherial, glowing, etc.), but if you ask any specific questions, they don't know how to explain it.

It's okay to have multiple pictures and mix what you like about one with that which you like about the other.

The more visual input we have, the better we can serve you, it's as simple as that!

And by all means, if there is something you don't like, speak up! We want to know. It's YOUR day and we'd like an opportunity to correct what you're displeased with. If you don't say anything, it's hard for us to correct it and make you happy.

Can I get a Hallelujah?

Your bridal beauty blogger,
Marcella.

Do You Love Makeovers?

Okay, I admit. It's almost a sickness. While she was here, I couldn't help but ask her if she wanted a mini makeover session, and offered the pictures I took (not professional) to be used for LinkedIn or something of the sort. However just as you need to take preventive measures to keep your skin young and healthy, the same applies to your eyelashes!

We realized all the small things that seemed to make a difference with me and so I defined our 7 Tips to Keeping Your Lashes Looking Lusciousnaturally, from the inside-out:

1. Keep a diet rich in Omega-3 Fatty Acids. It should be noted that women with a diet rich in these good fats during pregnancy, assures beautiful lashes for their children!

2. Remove your mascara thoroughly each night with a good makeup remover.

3. Avoid the overuse of mascara. In other words: the spider-eyes. All this extra weight is hard on these fine and delicate hairs, and can cause them to fall out before their time.

4. Replace your mascara EVERY MONTH! We know women that have actually continued using the same tube of mascara for over a year! A big no-no-no.

5. Avoid using waterproof mascaras (it's okay for your wedding day ;) Not only are they the toughest types of mascara to use, but they’re also very drying to the eyelashes. Unless you plan on bawling your eyes out watching ‘The Notebook’ in front of your new hubby, opt for a ‘smudge-proof’ mascara instead.

6. Do not perm your lashes or over-abuse the eyelash curler. I understand you want pretty eyelashes NOW, but you must consider that it’s actually working against you.

7. Keep up your health check-ups. It’s good to keep an eye on your thyroid, pituitary or any metabolic conditions, especially if you notice any sudden changes in the thickness or fullness of your eyelashes.

That saying, "You don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone" is so true. We spend a large part of our lives thinking how we want more than what we have now, and when time moves forward, we realize that what we had then wasn’t that bad after all.

By applying these tips to your beauty regimen, you are taking a step to prevent and enhance the eyelashes you have today. Once you have this part down, there are a number of eyelash treatments to dramatically increase their growth. Be assured that these will work that much better if you have a solid foundation, much like how exercise will be more effective if you keep healthy eating habits.

Even though the results may not be immediate, they will be more permanent and lasting. Eyelash care is a lifestyle!

Your Bridal Beauty Blogger,

Marcella

Do You Want A Natural Look For Your Wedding Day Makeup?

In skin care the most common comment is: " I have sensitive skin". For wedding makeup it's: "I want to look natural". What I have learned is that it's all relative and subjective to that person's interpretation of what qualifies as 'natural' (or 'sensitive' for that matter!)

I learned this the hard way, with one wedding in particular.

I came prepared with all my goods and the bride uttered the magic words: "I want my makeup to look natural". I smiled in acknowlegement -since I was familiar with the term- and I confidently began applying her makeup.

Beaming, I handed her the mirror when I was done. I was completely caught off guard when she almost started weeping. "It looks like I don't have anything on!", she cried in disappointment (or horror, I'm not sure).

I was a little confused...perplexed, dumbfounded.

I didn't understand. As far as I was concerned, I had given her exactly what she had asked for. In an effort to please my client and to keep her from freaking out, I calmly asked her to tell me specifically what she thought was missing. "Well" she replied, "I was hoping for some gold eyeshadow or something".

Huh? Okay, I don't know about you, but gold doesn't necessarily come to mind in my interpretation of natural, unless you're talking about the mineral found in God's green earth. It's not to say the bride wasn't right, but what I'm trying to point out is that broad terminology serves no one in this scenario.

We all have our own interpretations on the definitions of things when it comes to makeup: natural, dramatic, and generally what qualifies as good or bad makeup.

My point is, communicate. Communicate with your makeup artist, communicate with your hair artist and be specific. Give examples such as: "these are the colors I typically wear" or "I like eyeliner on top but not the bottom", etc.

If you don't ever wear makeup during the day, but you doll it up for a night on the town with the gals, this is important information because it shows you're not afraid of turning up the volume from time to time. It's much different than if you NEVER wear makeup, period.

The best is to have magazine clippings or email the artist pictures of makeup (or hair) you like. This will eliminate a lot of guess work on the artist's behalf, and frustration on yours.

It's all about and always about communication. It's why technology has come so far!

I hope this helps,
your Bridal Beauty Blogger :)

and P.S. The gold eyeshadow bride did end up very pleased with her makeup. Hurrah!

Should You Spend Money on A Professional Makeup Artist?

For some this may be a no-brainer. The answer is, "of course!!"

For others though, it may not be that easy, especially if you're dealing with a tight budget. It just depends on priorities and what you naturally feel is most important.

For example, if you're not the type of person to ever wear make-up, even when you go out at night, then chances are you may not see the value in spending the money.

You may even think to ask your best friend (who may sell Mary Kay or Avon, etc.) to do it. After all, they have access to many different types of makeup, right?

Well, not necessarily.

You see, I've come across many brides who want to save some money and cut some financial corners when it comes to their wedding- and I completely understand! Weddings can be serious dollars and I can see where things such as makeup and hair may seem like unnecessary luxury items that could allow some financial wiggle room in other areas (perhaps in catering, or flowers...)

However, I want you to close your eyes and think ten years down the line. Well, maybe keep your eyes open so you can finish reading this post :) Perhaps you'll have a few children by then and how will you be able to show them what an amazing or magical day that was?

If you're thinking what I'm thinking, then you answered pictures. Am I right?

And what do pictures show other than what the flowers, linens or cake looked like?

They capture the excitement and love in people's eyes, and guess what else?

The way you looked!

Now you may think that is vain for me to say, but the truth is that your photo album and the pictures that accent your home are images from your personal story book....your fairy tale.

It's the beginning of your new life together and the beginning of your own family. It gives way for others (who may not have been there) to relive that day and celebrate in the union that is your marriage.

You will ultimately be the judge but I wanted to present another perspective that you may or may not have considered.

May you make the best choice for yourself!

Do You Have a Friend Who Wants To Do Your Makeup For Your Wedding?

I was that friend once. I have had many friends that have tied the knot and my gift to them was their makeup and hair. I was able to touch them up throughout the day and make sure they were picture perfect at every turn and that their nose was powdered in every necessary moment.

Did they appreciate it? Of course.

Was it something of value to them? Most definitely.

You must know though that although I was the 'friend' that wanted to contribute by making the bride feel beautiful, I was also a professional make-up artist with many years of training under my belt.

That's the rub.

I've come across (and heard of) many brides that will allow that well-meaning friend or family member give them a makeover. Without professional products or training, the brides typically end up less than happy (unless she is extrememly laid back and in that case, kudos to her!)

Of course I'm a professional make-up artist, which goes along with being a perfectionist and very picky about my work. I would definitely not be that laid-back bride, that's for sure!

I also understand the compromise that this situation puts you in if it is a loved one that just wants to help.

What I suggest (whether with a professional or not), is to request a trial run. See how it goes and whether or not you'll feel comfortable with what they do.

If they have a natural talent and you're pleasantly surprised, then you're golden!

If they could use a little more practice, this will either give them time to brush up on their techniques or give you plenty of time to find a professional.

Just be prepared and whatever you do- do not assume they'll do a good job and do not wait until the day of the wedding!!

The worst time to be disappointed is moments before you're to be ready to walk down the aisle. A prepared bride is a happier and more relaxed bride...hopefully :)

Always making you unforgettable,
The Bridal Beauty Blogger
